Virtually all non-human species on our planet will be impacted by climate change. For many species, some or all of their current geographic ranges will become unsuitable in the future, for example due to changes in temperature and precipitation. At the same time, some areas that are currently unsuitable, for instance because they are too cold, will become suitable in the future. Most species will need to migrate in order to reach future suitable habitat, so they constitute another type of “climate refugee”. Today’s talk will address several questions, including
1. How have species already been migrating in response to recent climate change?
2. Will species be able to migrate fast enough and far enough to reach future suitable habitat in time to avoid extinction?
3. Which species are most likely to become future “climate refugees” and which are least likely?
